Shanelle Burcher defended her title in the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association senior women’s 63-kilogram single Sunday by the slimmest of margins.

The Grade 12 student from Denis Morris ended up edging Blessed Trinity’s Olivia Wist by three 1,000s of a second.

“Going into this race, I knew I could do it. I’ve trained long hours every single day and it was a real push to the final moment,” the St. Catharines Rowing Cub member said. “We didn’t even know when we got off the water who had won.”

Eventually, she heard her name announced as the winner of the event.

“It felt like the longest three minutes of my life. I’m not going to lie.”
